State Fair

We went to the State Fair of Texas yesterday. We hadn't been in several years, and after reading about the "best in show" fried foods this year, I was intrigued to try some. Here are some pics of the day.

 A welcome from Big Tex.

Rides on the Midway.

Train display in the Southern Living Greenhouse, with replicas of historic Texas buildings.

Amazing pumpkin carver.

The fabulous art deco buildings of Fair Park. The art work on the buildings and statues is amazing.

An acrobatic show. I remember these people from last year's America's Got Talent and they were even on Oprah.

Some of the Creative Arts prize ribbon winners. This chair is amazing. It is covered in seed and bugle beads. I can't even imagine the time that went into this. It deservedly won a Best in Show ribbon.

Another amazing work of art. The intricate detail of this clock is beautiful.

The scrapbooking first prize winner.

I liked all the mixed elements of this bag.

One thing I didn't know is they have categories and give ribbons for "Collections." (The compacts in the photo above got 3rd Place.) I have collections all over my house. Who knew I could get prizes for them? I will be entering in several categories next year, for both collections and art.

Here we are eating, again. This is what we consumed at our day at the fair: fried lemonade, fried chicken on a stick, French fries, fried chocolate, fried cookie dough, and a funnel cake. The people sitting behind us are eating fried PB&J&B (peanut butter and jelly and banana).

One of the highlights of the day was seeing the baby animals in the petting zoo. We got to pet a baby zebra, goats, camels, cows, Sicilian donkeys, kangaroos, and even an ostrich. The goats especially loved having their heads and ears scratched. Adorable! Here is a pic of the tiniest piggies I have ever seen. They were born at the fair last week. That is mama's water bowl, so you have a size comparison.

It was a fun day!

You definitely have to enter some of the competitions next year, especially the scrapbooking one.
I am intrigued by the fried lemonade, how is that made?

We would have tried the fried beer, but you needed to be 21 and we had our little brother from Big Brothers, Big Sisters with us. So that wouldn't have been a good example - although, good :)

I love your pictures, especially that chair swing thingy, great view :) We tried the funnel cake and that filled us up but I really wanted to try the coronary combo, fried butter and the chocolate covered bacon! Thanks for stopping by my blog and the love on my header, yes I did it myself, took forever!
