Christmas Tree Makeover

We needed a new tree, last year. When I put it up this year, even more lights were out. I had searched everywhere for a new tree that looked as pretty as the one I have, had as many lights, and as many tips. It didn't exist. Then I went to Walmart to buy lights to fix our old tree, and I found it. The most beautiful tree I'd ever seen, even better than the one at home.

It came home with me and down came the old tree, and up went the new. Since I had a new tree, I wanted to change up some of the basics. I made a ruffled muslin tree skirt for the bottom. I got the idea from a post from Miss Mustard Seed. However, I did not make mine "no sew." I knew the TX summers would melt the hot glue in my attic and turn my tree skirt into a pile of trash.

I sewed each ruffle and then stitched them onto a circular piece of canvas. It was more tedious than difficult. I call it my petticoat tree skirt. Now I want to make one to wear!

Now onto the tree top. For years, I put a large gold bow at the top of my tree. I have a beautiful rustic spun cotton angel that I have wanted to use, but she is too tall to be safely placed on the tree. So, I decided I'd make a new topper, too.

The larger start is cut from cardboard, covered in vintage sheet music, and edged in tinsel. the smaller star is fabric, to which I sewed strips of vintage lace. I backed it with another cardboard star, adhered it to the larger star, and also edged it with tinsel. Then I adhered the whole thing to the smaller end of a rusty old bed spring. The bed spring is so sturdy and fit over the top branches of my tree perfectly. I added several white doves (my original idea at a tree topper) to look like they are flying up the tree. They also help cover most of the bed spring.

I'm trying to decide if I should add some vintage paper angels to the star - maybe next year.

For now, our beautiful Duchess Furgie approves.

Gorgeous decor! Your kitty looks a bit like my sister's (from decades ago). His name was Marshmallow (what else would a then 9-year-old name a white cat?)

Stunning tree skirt, I can tell all the hard work it took to make it, your tree topper looks so pretty and love how Furgie is posing next to that ornament with the cat image :)
